Window Film

04/24/2014 4:15 PM

We are planning on placing window film on our factory windows.

Would you place them on the inside or the outside

The windows are in a heated factory

We are located in Canada

Outside.

If placed inside, the solar energy will still heat the window glass as it passes through coming in, and going back out.

Window films will perform ( survive ) better on the inside of the window where they are away from the weather.

Additionally the window films would be protected from outside interference from animals or vandalism.

However your internal atmosphere of the factory may contain chemical vapors which could be worse than external stresses. ( hope not ). Trusting that the internal atmosphere is reasonably clean, this becomes a non-issue.

So, internal film application would be my recommendation.

OK, you're right.

Only dual pane windows get it on the outside.

Thanks !! Actually you thought of an angle that I did not. I was thinking it was only an optical film for privacy or reflective; and not a thermal type film. Nothing in the OP suggested to me that it was a thermal issue.

Only Printing Canada knows for sure which he meant.

We have window tint in Arizona and storm windows in Minnesota.

Actually, if expense is not an overwhelming factor, you could put some on the inside, and the outside, as long as the outside film is made for being outside. This way you can find an ultimate mating of the degree of sun block you want, if limiting, or determining the desired illumination is also a consideration, as much as reflecting the heat.

Has anybody suggested laminating the film in the middle, like old safety glass?

I would be talking to the film manufacturer, not anyone else.

With all the answers no one asked what the purpose of the film is for and you don't say.

Films are made just to tint, Lo E to reflect IR and a clear laminate to hold the glass together so when broken shards do not drop unexpectedly on occupants. Each has it's place on the glass. What does the manufacture recommend?

Hi,

I am window expert for almost 50 years now.

As to your question, first we do not have enough info to give a good advice!

second and this is more important: Low E film works well on sealed units but they are

applied under very special conditions and I think you can not simulate those anywhere als.

As for shading from sunshine you need to know that this could be very dangerous for

your eye sight since the film may not have the ability to cut the UV's !

I would stay away from those films, the are only a temporary solution for your problem,

do not reduce your heating bill and may give you a false and dangerous impression of

security!

I would use roll down shades of the film. You can roll them down in the summer, and up in the winter. I put some film on some of my house windows, then after awhile I took it off. It can be very difficult to remove. The shades would have solved that problem.

I would suggest indoors, in order avoid weather consequences and deterioration. i.e. Heat, cold and wind.

Check current advertising for films and notice all are applied inside the area.

Apply it to the side that has the easiest access.

Inside or outside it won't last forever so you may as well make the job easier to do and subsequently easier to do again and again and again....

Re: Window Film

As discussed above we are now being told that if we put window film on the inside of a window that this can cause thermal cracking.

This is from a salesman we have asked the manufacture does anyone have an opinion here.

What I am looking for is a solution that reduces the heat in the summer in order that the staff on the floor are a little more comfortable.

Any comment are appreciated

Again I recommend shades (of any kind) or venetian blinds. The film is too permanent unless it is in the form of roll down shades. I know from experience. Mine was on the outside. It's very hard to apply professionally. Shades or blinds would probably be cheaper than installing the film.

Blinds, shades, curtains, drapes, newspaper, paint on the glass...

Skimpy clothing keeps about half the staff cool and the other half heated.
