A new, highly contagious canine influenza is spreading quickly in US kennels. It is believed to have jumped species from horses to dogs, as it was first seen at greyhound tracks where dogs were (editorial correction) possibly fed raw horse meat. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have issued no official recommendations, dog owners are warned to watch their dogs closely for the following symptoms: coughing, nasal discharge and fever. Dogs showing such symptoms should be isolated and see a vet, and the owner should tell the vet of the symptoms so that transmission risks can be kept to a minimum.
The influenza is being referred to by the following names: The New Canine Influenza, Greyhound Disease, Race Flu, Equine Influenza, Avian Flu.
If you are a dog owner, please take this seriously.
