1998 Chevy Cavalier Base

05/08/2014 3:38 PM

I have a 98 cavalier that is having starting issues. every morning in colder temps the car will start right up. when the temps outside starts to rise the thing doesn't want to roar to life.. it will try to turn over, then you hear kinda like a grinding sound.(maybe) then won't start. I've had to stomp the gas to start it a few times and that every now and then will work. what could this even possibly be

Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking ....

Fortunately there are loads of possible solutions for this problem, recycling the vehicle being the most popular of them.

What we've got here is failure to communicate.

"it will try to turn over, then you hear kinda like a grinding sound.(maybe) then won't start."

Define "try to turn over" Does the motor actually rotate?

Then what is "kinda like a grinding sound.(maybe)"?

What does stomping on the gas do? Does that make it "turn over" faster.

Pushing the gas pedal is not recommended and will not make the engine "turn over" faster.

From the description, I guess that the starter motor is poling. strip it down and check the bearings at both ends.

Cavalier and "roar to life" does not compute.

I still think CR4 needs to add a "Chevy Cavalier Won't Start / How Do I Size a Busbar / Why Is There Current In My 3-Phase Neutral" section

Why, nobody would go there to ask their stupid, redundant questions. OK Cavalier owners don't ask stupid questions. The stupid car has so many faults, we just haven't covered them all, YET!

No, it's not a 'Stupid Question Section' and that is not at all what I am saying.

No, it is the *frequency* with which we see these particular topics mentioned on this forum.

Nowhere in my post was I casting aspersions, lyn. That is your contribution to the meaning, not mine.

I qualified the Cavalier owners as not asking stupid questions, but the fact is that nobody looks at the rules for posting or the FAQs anyway, so providing them with a separate category would be fruitless.

This is turning into a waste of the OP's time.

BTW, your comment #6 is OT!

Lol. My sense of humor went down the same hole I nearly did last weekend. Tacking up a yard sale sign to a pole next to an irrigation ditch, when the ground under my right foot collapsed. I went down whilst my left leg splayed out on the ground beside the hole and snapped below the knee. Right foot never reached bottom. Yeah, I 've been pretty pissy this week and let it spill over into my posts. Sorry, mate.

Ouch!

I feel for you. I broke my right leg 20 years ago and it was a real pain. In many ways.

I'm pissy all the time, so I never notice it when someone else is too.

I home now, my winker works.

Surely someone other than you is responsible, hopefully someone with deep pockets- who is responsible for the ditch at that point?
