Looking for Schematic Capture Program for Electronic Drawings

05/09/2014 7:59 PM

Does anyone know of a Freeware App for drawing electronic components (passive, ICs) for use with Windows 7? I do not need simulation capability just drawing a circuit with a decent library of components. I would consider also an inexpensive one to buy and to be able to print PDF output. If you can give me links to the App site that would be great. Also tell me if you are an actual user of the program and think it is a great App. Thanks!

With a little creativity, you can use the graphics capabilities of MS Excel...and with variances in the row & column pixel sizes, you have control of overall grid size.

Search "Symbol for Resistor" or what ever component you are working with.

Save the image as a jpeg file.

Open it with paint.

Select and outline it.

Size it.

Copy it

Paste it to a master file.

Go to next component.

I've been doing that for awhile and am starting to get quite a collection of components I can select, copy, and paste to my diagram.

For my monkey work its adequate.

Eagle by http://www.cadsoftusa.com/. Unless they changed, you can download for free the "full" program but without a license I think you are limited to 2 sides of a board, one page of schematic and probably a device maximum or pin count maximum. If you are just doing a small project it will probably do all you need for free. There are also many community contributed scripts and programs (including 3D rendering). Most people use their libraries but if you prefer something a little different you can make your own (I use my own libraries).

In my experience, you can use the TINA software from Texas Instrument. It is free and easy to use.

I looked at that first and has simulation and much more capability, but the cheapest version was a Student version for $49 USD one year license. Check the link, the TINACloud is Free not the software. TINA CAD

The Software i mentioned is not TINA CAD. Please check this link: http://www.ti.com/tool/tina-ti. Im sure that it is very useful and simple.

OK I thought you were maybe referring to a Free App from TI not the TINA site. Thanks

Re: Looking for Schematic Capture Program for Electronic Drawings

The TINA or TINA-TI CAD tools look tempting rather than Freeware because of the simulation capability since most of my designs are Analog in nature so it would be advantages to have CAD, Schematic Capture, and PC board capability and more. I am developing products for the Music Industry and using hit and miss bread-boarding is slow, so simulating with Models and Spice has advantages.

I used Cadence for very large Digital simulation for ASIC's and that sure saved a huge amount of development time so maybe TINA is better suited for me. Any suggestions about my thought process would be appreciated.

Maybe you could also look at LTspice, which gives you the schematic capture and analogue simulation.
