With all the people on this site who won't use google, it's a wonder that the stock is over $500 a share.

Hold on a sec. Bwhahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahhahahahaaaaa.

There, I think that got most of it out. Proper lightning and earthing protection is very complex and will depend on numerous things such as site construction, environment, local regulations, (well the list goes on). Equipment lightning protection and earthing is almost as complex (and just as dangerous). Earthing and lightning protection systems are not toys and are not to be undertaken by those without the proper engineering training and experience. Improper earthing and lightning protection does not result in just damage to equipment, IT CAN RESULT IN THE DISSAPERANCE OF EQUIPMENT DUE TO EXPLOSION AND VAPORISATION.

Modes of operation (????????)

- Right way - The complete system is designed, manufactured and installed correctly and works

- Any other way - A half-assed attempt is made by someone who does not know what he/she is doing or of the dangers involved and the result is property damage and potentially death(s).

Let me put it another way. To get you up to speed on the basics would require, say 2-3 years of concentrated study (6 months if you already have a degree in engineering). A further 2 years of training should give you a good grounding (no pun intended) in the subject and allow you to do basic designs correctly and safely.

Think of it as asking us to draw you a single picture in crayon so that you can build a fully working jet plane.

Please state what you are trying to do, and I will try and help keep you and those around you alive.

A very good reply to a very "primitive" [simple or naive] inquiry unencumbered with details and application information of any kind.

Please refer Bureau of Indian standards on LP system IS 2309 ( 1969) . The complete drawing and information of earthing for LP and air termination is given there. BS 6651 also give the details. These are basic requirement of any practicing Electrical Engineer.Electrical Engineers have to be well conversant with Earthing and Protection which is a mandatory requirement for safety.

As it has been mentioned with the earlier commens the design and installation of the arrestor needs some specific area of expertice, how ever nothing should discourage you to learn. Please see the link to see different types, applications, and calculations like EU1202, etc,

Dear Guest Designing of Earthing system is a very specialised job weather it is substation earthing , Lightening protection, or static earthing .The safety of electrical equipments ,Personnel working on the system and the users of all electrical appliances depend on earthing hence cautioned. Please do not mistake, it is not meant to discourage any body from learning but to encourage youngsters for learning. Learning is a life long process and Knowledge is a never ending process otherwise why should some of us spend so much time for reading all what others have to say and then write these small notes in reply even after working in real big electrical projects . We are really learning many new things from youngsters in this process . Please study IEEE std. 80 . It will be great help to design earthing. Regards and Best wishes.
