Dear Friends;

Can any one explain the name and purpose of below item which can be seen connected with power transmission lines? Just a general knowledge question.

Here's a WAG based on their location. I'll guess that these are a form of line maintenance telemetry devices based on an inclinometer (measurement from level) to measure the amount of sag in these cables as temperatures change.

Those are vibration dampers and are used to dampen vibrations caused by the wind induced line vibration that is characterized by high frequency, low amplitude motion a.k.a. aeolian vibration......

....and these type address sub-conductor oscillation....

..."Critical to the longevity of a transmission line is its resistance to two main types of wind induced movement: Aeolian vibration and sub-conductor oscillation. Depending on the environmental conditions both these phenomena can cause failures to conductors and hardware in very short periods. "...

Great answer! And good links.

Power lines are something we see every day around us and mostly take for granted. Very few of us know anything about them.

Exactly right! I use this film to shew the difference between Natural Laws and National Laws. An injunction from the Court would not have stopped the oscillation!

They had the portable oscillation dampers on that installation. The kind with 4 wheels and rubber tires.

If only they had been a little faster in driving the larger 'oscillation dampers'/'spoilers' onto the deck ...if only...

Ahhh, Carnack the Great. I miss Johnny, Hell I even miss Jack.

When I stated A.I. I didn't mean Artificial, I meant Alien. I've never heard of anyone, that has his/her/whatever range of accurate timely information on a vast array of subjects. Wonder how he does picking stocks?

thanks SE. GA. I was going to guess some kind of emergency strain relief. Knowledge versus conjecture, once again!

These are called vibration dampers. There main purpose is to damp the vibration motion s generated by the conductor so as not to damage the fix end, near insulator of the cnductor. The conduc4or vibreates due to the passing wind, a phenomena refered to as aeronian vibration.
