water suppliers also use polyethelene pipes. But I'm guessing the original post is asking what pipes are used from the main stop valve to the house in question.

Underground domestic water supply piping is nowadays done in 20mm Ø polypropylene, coloured blue to distinguish it from gas supply, which is yellow.

Correction: polyethylene. (Polypropylene is poly-methyl-polyethylene, really.) [The end of the roll that was used for routing services to a new extension wasn't available for inspection until arriving home last night, and the memory is becoming a forgettory.] Either polyethylene or polypropylene would be entirely acceptable, though polypropylene tends to be a bit more flexible.

Hi There,

Here in Australia I am building a small house [ Studio ] on our property alongside the existing one & did a bit of research on plastic piping because of the big increases of the price of copper piping & fittings, came across an article that said that if a rat or other rodent chewed thru the in-wall or cavity plastic piping & it flooded your house out ,your insurance company WON'T pay any compensation, so I am going to stick to copper pipe & copper & brass fittings soft soldered or silver soldered . I might use it to run mains water to the studio where it is completely external but I certainly am not going to use any plastic on internal in-wall cavity fit-out.

Brien.
