Governor Definition: a: An attachment to a machine for automatic control or limitation of speed. b: A device giving automatic control (as of pressure or temperature). A Governor is a device which controls the energy source to a prime mover to control its power for a specific purpose. Basic governors sense speed and sometimes load of a prime mover and adjust the energy source to maintain the desired level. Advanced governors are often referred to as Control Systems. I would just like to clarify one confusion here that the main
role of the governor is not to increase or
decrease the speed which can be done via fuel control system (similar to
an accelerator on your car) but once the
speed of the engine has been set, the job of the
governor is to maintain that speed despite the variations in load. In
other words the governor controls the speed variation and keeps the speed
within restrained limits despite these variations.see also here http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/55716/How-does-an-electronic-speed-governor-workhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor_(device)
