Air Compressor : Screw Compressor or Integrally Geared Compressor

05/21/2014 8:12 AM

I want to choose an Air Compressor of following specification.

Inlet Pressure : ATM

Discharge Pressure : 109PSIG

Flow : 1942SCFM

Inlet Temperature Max. : 48 Deg C

No oil free air is required ( Oil carryover not a problem).

Which one will be the right compressor for above application?

1. Screw Compressor

2. Integrally geared Centrifugal compressor

also please give cost comparison of above two.

Regards,

RAtheesh

Have you considered a Rotary Vane compressor?

I have no experience with integrally geared centrifugal compressors but I have found screw compressors can be problematic (I suppose this statement will divide opinion).

I will be surprised if anyone recommends either of the two compressors you have suggested based on the information you have given.

What type of plant is receiving the air? What environment will the compressors be operating in? Has the piping distribution been sized correctly? You mentioned that oil free air is not required but how about moisture?

The design of a compressed air system does require a lot of thought regarding numerous considerations. Your stated volume flow rate points to a reasonable capital outlay. Proceed carefully.

Neither or both because they are specs not an application. Both can provide the specifications.

How many compressor suppliers are you talking to, Mildred?

Judging from OP's past history, I say zero.

Hi,

installed a screw compressor last year.

It cost 4 x what a piston type cost for just a little more in terms of volume (Which we do NOT need).

The advantages are:

Much less noise in the work environment

Aesthetically more pleasing

Less Maintenance and easier to keep clean.

Ask any manufacturer if their compressor ....will be the right compressor for above application?... and if the so no ...then go to another one.
