How Can I Access ANSI/ASTM Standards?

06/21/2007 8:11 PM

Could one (or more) of you guys please explain the relationship of the various published standards of ASTM; ANSI; and ASME? I can't seem to find anything online that will allow me to view or read the standard I am looking for. My problem is that I have a contract that requires certain materials and fittings to meet ASTM B16.39. The suppliers cut sheet says that it complies with ANSI B16.19. I need to know how to determine if the material meets the spec. I did manage to find out that the ASTM standard is somehow connected to ANSI, but I don't know how.

P.S. I do know what all the acronyms mean, I just don't know how the organizations function or interact.

Unfortunately, there is nothing online that will allow you to view or read complete ASTM, ANSI, ASME or other industry Standards. At most, you will be able to read abstracts, or brief descriptions of those standards on the various sites. You can, of course, purchase any standards you wish through those organizations as well as from third parties, such as Global Engineering. ASTM Standards are published in volumes of related standards but individual ASTM standards can also be purchased.

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Standards are either written by ANSI Standards Committee Working Groups or other standards making/writing organizations, such as the two you mentioned. There are a number of others, including IEEE, SAE, AAR, Federal, Mil, EEI, API, IFI and so on. In many cases, standards written by other organizations become ANSI Standards.

Yeah, you can get any standard you want from the ANSI website. I just bought four myself and it's easy and quick and you can download the pdf. Of course it looks like the starting price for a 15 page document is $100 USD and they go up from there. I paid $450 for four documents.

I am a designer for piping systems and pressure vessels in accordance with ASME code. I recognized a lot of codes and standards and used them in my designs and calculations such as ASME, ANSI, ASTM, TEMA, AWS, API, .... etc. Can you please define your project and type of material because i think there is a miswritten for some codes as ASTM B16.39, there is no spec. like this, may be ASME B16.39?, even that, I don't know which specs. B16.19 nor B16.39 is used for. For ASTM/ASME materials, I can help you, please specify which material you need, and send your e-mail.

ASTM : American Society for Testing and Materials

ASME : American Society of Mechanical Engineers

ANSI : American National Standards Institute.

Both are legitimate specifications. ANSI B16.19 covers "Malleable Iron Screwed Fittings" and a hardcopy is available for $20 US from http://global.ihs.com. The spec is not downloadable from this site but may be from others.

ANSI/ASME B16.39-1998 covers "Pipe Unions, Malleable Iron Screwed" and a downloadable copy is available for $42 US from the ANSI webstore; http://webstore.ansi.org/ansidocstore.

TEMA is a standard of the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association. It is not a standard for flanges. I have a PDF copy reaches 42 MB. You can look at Google : www.tema.org

Dear Mr. Galala: I found your posting on internet, and seems we can find some common interest. I am Professional Engineer, involved in design and manufacturing of pressure vessels per ASME Code. Our company, based in Ontario Canada, is major supplier for filtration equipement in Alberta oil sands projects. Please contact me on jlakovic@esscorp.ca to exchange some info.

Talk to you soon.

Regards.

Here's a functional pragmatic experienced hand's explanation: ASTM and ANSI standards often are 'codeshares' like the airlines (where one carrier does the flying, but the flight is listed for both it and its codeshare Partners) they believe that the work of the one meets the needs of the other. Like the airlines this avoids the waste of duplication and demand on scarce resources (talented volunteers that care passionately about the dreary details of engineering). One has responsibility for the development and writing, then lets the other publish/use it. avoids duplication; maximizes compatibility.

These specs, standards (there is a difference) and standard specifications are copyrighted and sold by ASTM. You can purchase the individual standard a number of ways, I used to buy the books for my materials and test methods; Now I purchase them on CD's. You can also download as PDF's online.

I happen to have the B (copper brass ) cd at work, and I happen to know that B16 is free cutting brass, so I can look up B16 and see what if any differences exist or if ASTM B16 wholly incorporates ANSI B16; They usually have a footnote or similar text on the first page.

We'll get back to you Monday.

That clarifies things significantly. I will await your post on Monday. I greatly appreciate your effort here. I don't typically have to deal with these things at this level. Mostly my job involves assembling and installing all of this stuff and letting the contract engineer or PM handle the details of procurement. I kind of got left holding the bag this time though, since the PM is out of the country for a few days.

Re: How Can I Access ANSI/ASTM Standards?

Good morning.

As our correspondent from Egypt, Abdel Halim Galala has pointed out, there is no ASTM B16.39 or 16.19 designation; Second, Your original post seemed to indicate a 'sheet' material; the title of ASTM B16/B16M is "Standard specification for Free-Cutting Brass Rod, Bar and Shapes for use in screw machines." This standard cover free cutting leaded brass UNS36000 in shapes amenable to machining in automatic screw machines (lathes). SHeet is notcovered and would be ruled out by dimensional requirements in section 9.

I see no indicia for either ANSI or ASME on this standard.

This standard is solely under the jurisdiction of ASTM committee B-5 on Copper and Copper alloys and is the direct responsibility of subcommittee B05.02 on Rod, Bar, Shapes, Wire, and Forgings.

You are well advised to seek clarification of what is meant, ASTM B16.39 is a nonstarter. (This standard only goes up to section 12) As others have pointed out, this is probably a typo or mistake in citation.

Good luck.

milo

The B16 looks to be ANSI/ASME, not ASTM:

ASME/ANSI B16.39 - 1986 (R1998) - Malleable Iron Threaded Pipe Unions

This Standard for threaded malleable iron unions, classes 150, 250, and 300, provides requirements for the following:

  • (a) design
  • (b) pressure-temperature ratings
  • (c) size
  • (d) marking
  • (e) materials
  • (f) joints and seats
  • (g) threads
  • (h) hydrostatic strength
  • (i) tensile strength
  • (j) air pressure test
  • (k) sampling
  • (l) coatings
  • (m) dimensions

If your firm has need for frequent use of ANSI/ASTM specs, go to ihs.com and purchase a subscription that will allow you to search for and download these specs. If you only need a few ASTM specs, go to astm.org and buy electronic copies of whatever you need.
