A gnu day, a gnu start, I always think. Somehow, I just can`t picture you dressed as Judy. Croc maybe, but not Mr Punch - he`s far too naughty. Darn, now I`m salivating about sausages and guess what item is not in the flippin` fridge .

We`re all groan ups here .

Sorry to our OP, but I`m finding it hard to take this too serious having scoped some previous. Please excuse me, but by keeping your post active there`s more chance of somebody arriving with a good answer for you. For what it`s worth, I`m interested to see. I did test drive one flavour of Linux once, but it just didn`t ring my bells. It left me feeling that I`d need to know a bit more about coding so that I could get it to sing and dance the way I`d like.

Perhaps there is maybe an alternative to Linux that can meet your needs ? I`ll stop fooling around, your question is reasonable enough and I shall certainly be reading a good answer when one arrives.

If this doesn't work then you have to be more specific why this doesn't work.

hmm.. We are planning to make an os for our purpose.. We know a bit about kernel programming.. Suppose if we go with Ubuntu, Fedora, likewise means they will ask for their banner.. So we only need of GNU linux from which Ubuntu, Fedora are developed...

Re: LINUX DOWNLOAD

- so you want to build an OS based on other peoples' LINUX / UNIX software without allowing them any credit for their work?? You ask for free software so that you can develop a proprietary software ( custom ) from it ?

YOur ability to code and customize your own version is sadly lacking if you cannot get past the identification screen to put your own ( if you dared ) in place. How would you justify your actions to the dozens of contributors to the original software ? Do their efforts and gift to you mean nothing ?

RED HAT was a prime source for the original Linux versions, and is probably still one of the major sources. Beyond that, Linux / Ubuntu / etc are all open- source, so I do not see where your problem should exist to use it, but not assume some kind of "ownership" of it.

There are many sources of linux and variants to choose from, but ALL of them will include a source acknowlegement. For you to seek a " clean " version to make YOUR OWN is not in the spirit of open - source software.

Join the Linux developers' group, and find out what YOU need to do in order to put Your brand on your version, ethically.

Go to the Linux forum and find out how you can contribute, before you TAKE.

I am not surprised that few if any would offer you direct help on this.

I'm a bit lost on all this. Can anyone inform on the pros/cons of Ubuntu,Fedora,Backtrack etc ?

Idle curiosity on my part, sarav07K, but is the question simply because you're one of the many a bit wearied by Microsoft ?

Re: Linux Download

Distribution vendors like Ubuntu, Fedora etc are those that assemble an unusable on its own kernel like Linux or GNU-hurd and an also unusable on is own bunch of GNU system tools and drivers, stick it in a CD, write the scripts for booting, installation and troubleshooting, considering that active, constant development causes inconsistencies all the time and calls for painful debugging sessions. So I think you have some things mixed-up here. Look for distributions that look suitable for your hardware and the work you intend to do on your PC and don't try to make your life difficult. ALL those that you mentioned, are GNU, and are Linux. S.M.

I'm a big Linux fan and can easily choose/use any one of dozens of existing distros. Some listed here:

http://www.linux.com/directory/Distributions/livecd

and

http://distrowatch.com/

If you cannot find an existing distro that works for you, then you probably want/need to build your own customized distro from scratch. This is fairly complex project. You can learn how to build your own distro or hire someone to do it for you. Either way, good luck!

From my response on Linux.org:

Actually, you can build your own Linux Distro from scratch. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

I think this is what you are looking for. This should give you a start and allow you to develop the O/S that fits your needs, while not having to deal with any "Branding". Just adhere to the GPL, and other legal requirements that the other Distros did when they built theirs.

Good luck.

Google the Free Software Foundation. They are the keepers of the GNU Project

What you're attempting (writing a kernel) for a processor to compile the system on seems to NOT be a simple thing. I January I purchased 2 Intel boards from Mouser and had to download new software(basic boot loader) that was compatible with the IDE running on my laptop. One of the features was Linux system to run on the board, a fully functional version has yet to be compiled for the Quark SOC processor which is supposed to be x86 compatible, I've collected 50 pages of non-function workarounds and Intel still doesn't have a Linux system that compiles cleanly and doesn't crash on it, Good Luck!!!
