drain line directly to hot well

06/24/2007 6:16 AM

there is a drain pipe hand up ( condensate steam and flash steam) and it is reached to the hot well of the condenser !

is it right that steam enter to the hot well from its side , or hot well must only take liquid condensate from its side?

and if it cannot steam enter to hot well from its side what about of this suggestion that to install an separator at the end of this drain pipe ?

I am sorry for annoyance, actually this drain pipe at an company, but it was without any separator therefore I asked that question !

I am sorry again for annoyance, thank you.

You may need a steam trap in this line to prevent steam from entering the Hotwell. By doing this you would not be wasting the steam or flashing it in the hotwell.

you are right but my problem that make me ask this question there was not steam trap at that line , it was connecting directly to the condenser without steam trap.

this drain line was at application of steam turbine by pass which wanted to prevent steam enter to the turbine and convert it to the condenser by using steam conditioning valve

so maybe for this steam tarp is not used because steam is wanted to enter to the condenser .

I see what you are saying. I will check on our turbine/condenser con-fig. and see how we are doing it. I do know that condensers are made to condense low pressure steam/condensate after the turbine has used the energy from it. Basically we have 850 steam into the turbines and 150 and 50 extracted after the turbine. The hot condensate that is left goes to the condenser to cool or flash off before being returned to the boiler feed water system. I would think it would be ok to have some steam go to the condenser as long as the pressure rating is not greater than the design of the condenser. I would check with the manufacturer before changing any thing though.
