Grounding of MV Switchgear Panels

05/30/2014 4:13 PM

Dear All,

Recently we have made a grounding pit with four (4) copper coated rods each of 1.5 meter length connected all in parallel. Then checked the ground resistance of copper rods independently with Kyoritsu Earth resistance tester using 3 wire method (Fall-of-potential), the resistance was 12.54Ω.

Later on we connected the grounding rods with the grounding cable coming from panels and again checked the resistance of the grounding rod from the same point as we checked earlier the result was 1.55Ω. Now I have the following questions.

1. Why is the difference in two readings?

2. Which one is the correct grounding resistance?

3. Is the 2nd method is correct or not?

Please guide me accordingly.

I think that it would be appropriate when someone performs research for you and supplies you with correct answers, the least you could do is vote SE a GA.

You checked individual pit resistance 1st that comes 12.54 ohm

now you checked grid resistance of four parallel earthing pits so resistance should be 12.54/4 i.e. approx 3 ohm.

Both methods of measurement resistance are ok
