Pollution Control and the Environment

06/26/2007 7:12 AM

We see that scientist are too much upset about environment. They want developed countries to take serious action to control so that pollution should less. My point is that their worry is correct but by all effort they can not control the situation, I have some reasoning about this but before going in detail I want to take view of my fellows who are serious about this matter.

I'm a bit unclear what you are asking for. You're saying you agree that damage to the environment is running out of control, but you think there is nothing we can do, and wondering if other people think that as well?

If that's what you're asking, then yes, I think there is a dangerous level of pollution on the whole and that climate change is happening. I don't think we're going to become a 'green' society next year, but I certainly don't think humans are doomed to run rampant until the world is uninhabitable.

I'd certainly like to hear you go into detail about what exactly you mean.

There have been several other threads discussing environmental issues that you might find interesting, such as this one that began by asking about nuclear energy.

There is a lot people can do. Reduce, reuse and recycle resources. Walk short distances instead of driving whenever possible. Switch off electrical appliances when not in use. Don't litter. Minimize pollution.

I know that each individual cannot only contribute a little, but if each and every single individual were to do so, collectively it would amount to a lot. Instead of waiting for politicians to take the lead (and everyone knows they never will unless it benefits them and their families personally), we should all do whatever we can to save the environment, no matter how small it may be, for eventually it will make a difference.

I agree, there is a lot we can do as private citizens.

I also believe that market forces, driven by public will and demand, are ramping up private and government financial support for greener and more efficient technologies and solutions, which I am quite convinced will result in breakthroughs at an exponential rate. GM would not be developing the Volt (after scrapping their previous generation EVs), if they weren't getting the message. You can support and advance these technologies with your purchase power.

The last, and probably most difficult component, is overcoming the resistance to tougher industrial regulation, which is put up by the powerful lobbies (Oil & Gas, etc.) through the politicians that they own and control. Quite simply, vote for the politicians who are most willing and able to make the tough decisions required (probably the ones with the fewest puppet strings), and make it clear that they will only maintain their public support as long as they follow through on their promises, again, with your vote. Get involved, join an organization, sign a petition, write your MP, etc. I know some have been preaching this since the 60's, but now the "writing on the wall" is clear, we are fighting for the future of the planet and our very existence. Apathy is no longer an option.

Thank you very much for participating in the discussion. My purpose of discussion is to understand this global warning in the light, what people around us think about this global warning and finally try to find, is it a really threat (or just a natural phenomena like so many other natural phenomena which are threat for our life but they are very important to move our life and some smart people are using this natural phenomena to get some benefit)? I will put forward my points in this discussion slowly as I see how people think about it and I try to move in scientific way.

We all know that we can reduce pollution by changing our daily life e.g. turn off the light if nobody is in the room, turn off the TV if nobody is watching, minimize use of your car by combining your grocery shopping, car pool, reuse plastic bags/bottles, minimize use of water etc. etc.. We want the coming generations to be able to live healthy on this planet.

We want the coming generations to be able to live healthy on this planet.

It might be useful practice ready for living elsewhere, where resources might be rather less available than they are on this planet.

Certainly, there is much we can do. As engineers, we could start thinking about integral solutions wich permits humanity live better by designing flexible clean process instead of traditional solutions that have caused damage to the environment. But much more as normal humans, starting at home (optimizing the water and electricity use, reducing the use of plastics packaging when shopping, i.e.).

Thanks again to all who are participating in this discussion.. Everybody want to do some thing and also suggesting some way also. This is very appreciating. This is the duty of all to move in natural way so that our future generation can understand how we can use our natural way like walking, using less car etc. In this way we get healthy environment for us and for our future generation but this is a entirely different subject and have no relation with Global Warning , about which environmentalist saying that our planet temperature is increasing and this is very dangerous. My point is that fact about our plane is very different, scientist and researches can tell only that currently this is going but their prediction that this is dangerous is not correct. I try to put forward my points more clearly in this discussion slowly as I see how people think about it and I try to move in scientific way.
