OIL LEVEL SENSING UNIT REPLACEMENT

06/30/2007 8:42 AM

On an old (1989) production machine (still running) I must replace the level sensing main unit (not the sensing rods). The sensing rods are in a tank with thin lubricating oil (10 SAE) to sense the (preset) level of the oil in order to stop the machine if the oil level is not between the preset limits.

The -old- unit is made by Hermann RUF , HR-1011 26 , 220V AC , 48-62Hz , 5-150 KΩ.

I am wondering if I can replace the unit with a today one in the market (sensing mostly water) or I must find one for oil specifically?

Any comment welcome.

We used to use one brand (Omron, I think) for these types of level control. In one application, we were controlling water level. In the other, we were controlling oil level. The oil's not the same as yours though (we used vegetable oil). In both cases, the level control worked fine.

The only problem we encountered with sensing the oil level was the formation of scum on the rods. Sometimes, they make contact with the next probe. Eventually, we changed it to an inductive sensor that we installed on a sight glass with a metal float in it. If not for the scum, we might have had that control indefinitely.

In case someone else has not had any experience with your application (which I doubt), I'd just purchase one unit and test it. They're not very expensive.

What about non contact type level switches? With recent similar problem but with waste water level control, and thereby operation of pump, we failed two times (1st with magnetic level switches, anothere rod type, which has contamination and lossing sensitivity problem). Hence our engineering is going now for Radar type (non contact)switchs.

Any comments?

I will check with Omron local dealer to see what he has to offer for replacing the original sensing unit (not the sensing rods, because they have no problem).

Thank you

You might find the sensing unit you need at http://www.endress.com or go directly to their Greece representative at:

The company specializes in level control, flow etc.

I will check Monday morning the Greek representative for an equivalent unit.

Thank you
