Pulse Output from a Flowmeter

06/27/2014 6:46 AM

Hey all

I have a siemens magflo 5000 magnetic flowmeter. When i connect the pulse output form from the flowmeter to pulse input of the energy meter(Endress + Hauser Rh 33).I cant read pulse( no flow being registered on the energy meter).

Did you follow the installation instructions accurately?

Is something flowing through the flow meter?

Do the wires have to be stripped before installation, some do some don't?

Is the 1/0 switch set to the proper position?

What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

The flow meter is already reading flow. I have problems reading it on the energy meter. The digital pulse is set as volume/Pulse. I have tried different values of volume per pulse. Is my out put voltage high to detect a pulse. Do i need a resistor? My manual says > 2 volts is consider logical 1 and <1 volts is considered logical o

Good! You have a manual that states at least some of the critical information for the meter to work. Now you must find a way (oscilloscope) to measure the pulse coming from the flow meter.

What is the magnitude of the pulses at the energy meter?

What is the nominal pulse frequency and acceptable pulse frequency range for the energy meter?

Is there a minimum pulse width (hi or lo) that the energy meter must see? Very often this becomes a problem.

Have you considered the idea that your energy meter has simply failed?

yeah we tried with the other meter as well still no flow. I used my fluke multimeter I can read voltage 0 to 2 and 2 to 0.

Maybe the flow transducer output is just an open/closed relay contact output (or the transistor equivalent). Maybe it needs a voltage and/or a resistor to actually create the 0-2V pulse.

I've met this sort of problem before.

It's really just a matter of matching the output of the transducer to the input of the meter. Study both manuals...

The Siemens Mag5000 can have a pulse/volume output or it can have a frequency (continuous steam of pulses) output proportional to flow rate, for instance 0-1KHz proportional to 0-Qmax.

1) Which terminals are your pulse outputs connected to on the Siemens Mag5000?

2) What parameters have you selected to configure pulse setting and what value(s) have you selected?

3) What is the Siemens Qmax?

E&H RH33 BTU meter

4) Which terminals is the pulse signal wired to on the RH33?

5) Which flow units have you selected?

6) Which conversion volume unit/pulse or pulse/volume unit have you selected?

7) What type sensor (RTD or current) and what range did you configure for the temperature sensors?

8) Is this a certified instrument (for which number of configuration changes is limited)?

Finally got to work. I use a 10K ohm resistor between the pulse inputs of the energy meter

The previous energy meter was working fine( contrec 212) but we are in the process of upgrading the meters . The previous one was working fine.

1. The flow meter was hard to acess as it is mounted at the top.

2. All our meters are configured as volume/pulse.

3. Qmax was 1200 m3/hr.

4. Input 10,11

5. I tried all units.

6. Volume per pulse

7. It is a PT 100

8. Yes

I think the terminals used on the flowmeter are 57 and 58(active powered) which require a pulldown resistor whereas the terminals 56 and 57 are passive powered and dont require a pull down resistor
