Onload Changeover of Fuel Oil Transfer Pump for a 300MW Boiler Fired with RFO

07/01/2014 4:52 AM

Hi

I want to know what is the experience on onload shifting/ changeover of fuel oil pumps for a boiler that is supplying steam to a 300MW machine. Boiler fired with RFO.

The strategy we opted is to decrease load and then do switching on load so alteast if any trouble arises leading to trip then unit should not pose risk to system.

Is there some thing in design we can do..

What does it say in the User Manual that was supplied with it?

How did the telephone call with the boiler manufacturer's Technical Helpline go?

follow the manufacturer instructions have priority .

by my point of view.

if you want to shift the prime mover load of pump ,from diesel to electric or vise versa.

just you need to know the torque and do an arrangement of electromagnetic multi clutch to hand-overing the load and to accommodate the torque thrust .

and if you want to shift the complete fuel load from one complete system to other .that is very simple just run the standby system bring the flow 10% lesser to existing and shift directly ,without any speed fluctuation .

Call me cynical if you like.

I really can believe that someone in a position to make changes to a 300MW power plant would come on to a web site to ask advise.

The question arises as when unit at full load the fuel pump changeover causes some trouble to boiler process. safe side is to decrease load and then do.

I am looking for experienced feedback if some one did changeover incase of unit at full load and fuel oil pump changeover.

Experienced feedback would be to first understand why your pressure and flow rate drops during the changeover. You state that you're using RFO (Residual Fuel Oil) so I assume (uh-oh) that the forwarding pumps are identical, pumping the same fuel just from different sources, and the fuel conditions are also matched in quality, composition, temperature, and viscosity.

Typically multiple fuel sources are forwarded through check valves into a common header, pressurized by a positive displacement pump, then fed into a fuel distribution manifold for delivery to the burners. Usually the BMS (Burner Management System) determines the flow rate to each burner by keeping the pressure high enough to accommodate small swings in pressure, correcting the flow via a bypass valve arrangement at the gun. If all of this is working properly then you should have a bumpless transfer. Since you do not then you need to find out why not.

You need someone who understands every step in the fuel delivery and burner management process for your particular boiler. Your current "patch" indicates that no one there does. You've been lucky so far, get factory trained personnel in there ASAP, before your lack of understanding results in a boiler or fuel oil explosion, and a very long and expensive outage.
