What is Gravity Die Casting?

07/03/2014 2:30 AM

Gravity Die Casting is a permanent mould casting process, where the molten metal is poured from a vessel or ladle into the mould. The cavity fills with no force other than gravity, filling can be controlled by tilting the die. As with the low pressure process, undercuts can be incorporated into the component form with the use if separate sand cores. This process gives a better surface finish than sand casting as well as better mechanical properties, both due to rapid solidification.

I like it! The question that comes with the answer!

How are you getting on with your porosity issues?

So, what would anti-gravity die casting involve?

"So, what would anti-gravity die casting involve?"

The mold is on the inside!

Oh. I must have some anti-gravity casting going on inside my basement.

Seven come eleven although, for that, you need a pair.

I prefer the "Lost Wax" method of casting....

I started using this method a few times but I always have to stop because I keep losing my wax.

GRAVITY OR CENTRIFUGAL die casting??? Gravity is what you explained, centrifugal is by means of a turning disk shaped mold , which is filled from the center.

This process is widely used in the manufacturing of cheap "bijouterie" (jewelry)

Centrifugal force prevent formation of pores.

solidification needs cooling. if the mold is not cooled it gets heated up and results in rejects with voids, under filling etc. The alloy has to be such, that it cools in a narrow band, otherwise liquid below surface when solidifies, it can create voids. There are many gravity casting applications, but all with good control and cooling.

This is the answer. Was there a question, or are you just "having a moment", a "flash of inspiration"?

Gee, I thought THIS was gravity die casting. Good thing you clarified.
