What's next, "Transparent Aluminum?"

10/08/2005 8:02 PM

Steve writes:
I just recently ran across this invention by a Hungarian architect named Áron Losonczi. By mixing small optical glass fibers in with concrete aggregate, he's come up with concrete that transmits light.

It might be interesting to brainstorm possible uses for the stuff, aside from the obvious one of making concrete buildings brighter on the inside. His company Litracon, Has made a concrete lamp as a demonstration, but there have to be neater applications than that.

Translucent concrete walls... cool!

If only Scotty were around to see this!

On a larger note, it seems like there's a lot of innovation going on in the world of concrete lately. Besides concrete that transmits light, there have recently been announcements of bendable concrete, porous concrete (to help with drainage), and a concrete "building in a bag." - which I guess you could now make translucent, right?;-)

The concrete guys are just going wild lately!

[0] The National Building Museum in Washington, DC is running [1] a great exhibit on the history of concrete, the use of concrete in art and architecture, and new innovations in concrete.

Well, actually.........yes, hehe

These boffins have come up with a new way to fuse aluminium and glass. I guess scotty was right after all..

American military is looking at using it as new armoured tank glass as it's stronger than what they currently use.......
