World's Smallest Car! Tricked Out with Buckyballs!

10/27/2005 7:16 AM

Scientists at Rice University have made and proven that a tiny single molecule 'car' they created rolls along the surface of gold rather than slides.
The car measures 3 to 4 nanometers across, a little wider than a DNA strand, and can even carry a payload.
In order for your nanocar to move though you have to heat it to 200 degrees Celcius.

Cool!

That is the coolest nano-thing I've seen in a while. Picturing it moving kind of reminds of the old "game a life" cellular automata simulation, where you could build "crawlers" and such from very simple behaviors.
