Weep Hole on Vessel Pad Plates

07/06/2014 1:54 PM
Dear All,

kindly advise the weep hole purpose in the vessel pad plates like (saddle wear plate, vessel lifting lug pad plate, vertical vessel leg pad plates). Would this weep hole should be needed in the small hand rail cleat pads and ladder support cleat pads also?

Please help me..

Thanks & Regards

Rajasekar

I couldn't have said it better myself. They serve several different functions, depending on the application. Pumps also have weeps to notify of seal leakage. They can be critical in most applications, like venting to ambient pressure also.

GA Lyn, and nice link too

"The only purpose of weep hole is to vent out the gas during welding of reinforcing pads."

Guess that means the plates he wants to weld should have a weep hole as well.

I would plug them later to prevent water or moisture getting in.

With what will you plug them? If you weld you are back to the gas venting problem. It is better to provide a drainage weep in addition.

Whatever suits: drop of silicone or a ready made rubber plug. The gas venting problem only exists during welding me thinks!

Weep Holes also prevent the Pad from acting as a pressure retaining component in the event the vessel/pipe wall under the pad develops a leak. These pads are not designed as pressure retaining components, re-pads are typically only designed as area replacement elements.

OFF Topic? Why? The weep hole is many times used for a Pneumatic test (2 or 3 Bars) To verify the fillet weld Pad- Pressure part. Also this hole is used to check leaks during the Hydrotest. Off Topic? You are off topic
