Water Screen Projection

07/07/2014 12:02 AM

Hello, I have a problem that I have spent 2 years testing. I have created a water screen to project still pictures and videos on using it a a projection screen. I have used various hole sizes from 1/8" down to 3/32 and a host of other diameter holes. Using various metal and plastic material testing with various pressures and water volume. The screens have been small scale averaging approximately 6'+- in nozzle length. I have used several rows of water down to a few rows drilled for the water to pass through. The screens will project a reasonable picture on it but haven't been able to increase the resolution of the picture to a acceptable level. I mu be missing something and sure could use any suggestions on how to increase the picture resolution on the water screens. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Hook

You need a lot of nozzles, close together, with low pressure, tiny drops no misting...rear projection....

"There are 1,700 jets per every 10ft. section of screen. To scale, then, there are actually more 'pixels' than in a high-resolution monitor.""

"....dumping 200 to 300 gallons per minute...."

I make that about 14 nozzles per inch....must be like hypodermic needles....

Try adding a small amount of white paint to help give the light something to reflect off of.

Good idea... or that water soluable fluid (a form of oil I think) added to water for use in water based hydraulic cylinder elevators.

Would cutting oil used as coolant in lathes & mills do? Usually around 50:1 mix, some produce a white fluid.

As the water accelerates the spacing between droplets will increase so it may be beneficial for the water to be at terminal velocity when it leaves the nozzles.

I am just guessing. I have no experience in this.

You don't say explicitly in which direction your nozzles face but this site:
http://www.sxsevents.co.uk/water-projection-screens-video-screen
suggests upwards. "HOW DOES THE WATER SCREEN WORK?
Developing our water screen technology took several months of work from our most senior staff, as well as the input from consulting engineers. This has resulted in us having some very unique and customised technologies. The basic principle of the screen system is to push water in an upward motion from the ground in a relatively flat spray. This gives a surface that we can project onto using high-power video projectors."
That would suggest high-pressure water through fine nozzles.
