Capacity of T/F

07/17/2014 11:10 AM

If a distribution transformer of 11kv/433v is lying in front of you & there is no number or rating plate on it. What is the simple way to determine the capacity of that t/f ?

Go back to the manufacturer with the site name and the date it was supplied, Murphy. They ought to be able to find something in their records that might suffice.

Or check the installation's single line diagrams. It ought to be on those.

Or check its maintenance records. It ought to be in there.

Or check the voltage and protection settings both sides of it. That might give you a clue.

Otherwise it's scrap. Order a replacement and make sure you take better care of its documentation and its label next time. Shame on you! Why tear the label off? That's plain silly. And why throw its documentation away? Ridiculous!

A rough indication of the t/f (transformer) rating can be found by looking at how large it is. You know the voltages and I am assuming it is a standard oil-filled type so physical size would be a good rough indication of capacity.

Have a look on the internet for similar transformers and find one that is of similar size, its capacity should be similar to the capacity of the transformer you are trying to figure out.

Alternatively contact your local power board (or similar), they may be able to tell you.

That's OK, but depending on the age of the transformer it's of no reassurance.

I moved and reused a 50 year old 500KVA 11/.55KV transformer, it was bigger than a modern 1000KVA unit.
With modern design tank sizes have shrunk tremendously.

That's why it has to be of similar construction (and yes age) if you want a rough idea only. It is only a rough guide.

If there is no rating plate on it, how do you even know the voltage it operates on?

It is possible to know the voltages by knowing where it's installed.

Why do you want to determine that?

Some junior staff brought to return/deposit as a damaged one but I have to take entry of its capacity in kva & oil capacity also

Have the junior staff call the agency who is returning it and have them identify it.

It's inconceivable that you would accept a damaged unit without supporting documentation from the returning agency.

I sense either negligence or incompetence here.
