Type of CT Suitable for Oil Filled Transformer

07/17/2014 8:24 AM

Hi,

Please share your experience on the following --

1) Whether resin cast CT (for example bar primary & 25 /50A secondary) can be used in mineral oil filled transformer.

2) What are the different types of CTs recommended for mineral oil filled transformer.

Thank you in advance for your help

Excuse my ignorance, but what does CT stand for again?

The transformer manufacturer is the best source of information, and the telephone is the quickest route to it.

A current transformer inside a oil filled transformer does not make sense to me.

Do you mean a CT instead of an oil filled transformer? Sort of as a replacement, alternative transformer?

You need to be sure that the resin will withstand the oil that it is immersed in. Not all insulating materials can withstand constant immersion in hot transformer oil. Only the manufacturer should be relied upon for advice.

Measure the current in a circuit without breaking the circuit to insert the meter.

Epoxy or any other resin cast are generally not used in oil of any type.

We manufacture CT's and for use in oil the CT's are not cast or varnished.

They are insulated with polyester (Melinex or Mylar) tape and then wrapped with a cotton tape. These are supported in an insulating frame over the cable or bushing and the oil is the actual insulation for the CT.

These are frequently used in transformers and the like, with one CT at each end of each coil to quickly identify any earth or leakage fault in the coil. Sometimes they are matched to the CT at the first circuit breaker to identify a fault between the coils and the circuit breaker

Meramec makes bushing CTs for "in-oil" applications such transformers. Both metering and protection class.

See IEEE C57.13.1 for specific details
