Proportional Solenoids

07/21/2014 2:24 PM

Hi, I have got proportional solenoid and its amplifer.since I am familiared by only on/off solenoids.so i have doubt dat how current and voltage of solenoid is varied.if supply 24v maintained constant but only current is regulated then to maintain the power of the solenoid same current only has to flow know.might be my assumption absolutely wrong.plz help me out how v,i,power of that proportional solenoid maintained against normal on/off solenoid.

The proportional solenoid I'm familiar with uses pulse width modulation (PWM).

They seem to be going that way in refrigeration. They also talked about going to some stepper motor exv's(electronic expansion valves), too. The size equipment I work on does not use these technologies much yet, so I am going mostly by what I've read. But, I have seen a few PWM valves on specific equipment for about 20 years. -- JHF

You have the solenoid and [presumably] the proper driver for the solenoid. What more do you need. If you wish to figure out how it works then turn it ON, measure the voltage and current with the right instrument [an oscilloscope with a voltage and current probe] and then apply some basic network analysis on the wave forms you see. Remember Mr. Norton and Mr. Thevenin are your friend. You probably will have to add some non-linear circuit theory here but you'll figure it out.

OP needs to be lead by the hand. Poor thing. He needs someone to train him.

But, you know me. We had to find our own answers or someone close by with the patience to train us.

Now, it's instant gratification and I want it now, with examples.

For example" Hi, I am about to attend an technical interview of a transformer manufacturing company, I would like to know electical safeties involved in protecting power, distributed and other types of transformers.and few basics behind their sensing and action of tripping."

A well known proportional solenoid is the loudspeaker, especially when driven with DC or PWM.

Used as an actuator of sorts for many, many years.....

This may further understanding or how they work!!!

This can be done through experimentation (as has been pointed out) A proportional solenoid will have different applications than a standard on-off solenoid. Just for interest sake, what shipboard equipment (I presume you are STILL on board a ship) uses such delicate gear as proportional solenoids?)
