System Volatege

07/23/2014 1:20 PM

In USA and Canada, the system voltage is 480V AC for3 phase system and 240V AC for single phase system, How is it possible, since the line to neutral voltage is 480/root3=277, then how it become 240V

This is as good a place as any to start... I guess...

Interesting!

(spelling of "Voltage" corrected in header because I did not know how "intersting" is spelled.)

You can consult also IEC 60038 Table 1 A.C. systems having a nominal voltage between 100 V and 1 000 V inclusive and related equipment

Three- phase 60 Hz [USA, Canada]:

120/208; 240;277/480;347/600;600

Single phase:

120/240 V.

I strongly suggest that you visit this site: The Basic Principles of Electricity | Anixter

A thorough reading of the many sources available on this site will reduce the likelihood of your repeating nonsensical questions.

One can hope but there are always the problems of comprehension and retention.

It is little bit confusing but it can be done but the main point is it is referring to the same thing, 120V is the AC voltage on a single hot wire in US home with respect to neutral, Well it is correct that in US utilities company provide a split phase of 240V AC for single phase system, it is due to they consist two legs of 120VAC for 180 degrees out from phase with one another. In US the AC power oscillate to 60 cycles per second.

240/415 Volts it should be, for 3ph in UK and Oz, but not North America. There it is 2ph, so get 120/240 Volts etc.

BTW is the North American 1ph voltage 110, 115, 117 or 120 Volts? I have seen all these values quoted.
