Mechanical engineer looking to upgrade education...

07/02/2007 9:43 AM

I am a mechanical engineer with 7 years of experience. I hold a BSc in Mechanical engineer and work in maintenance at a plastics manufacturing facility. What would be the next step to enhance my career? Should I get a technical degree in electronics/electricity/mechatronics or an MBA? I´m good at machines and I love them, but in the future I don´t see myself nor want to keep working for some one else. I would like to start my own company. Sometimes I fear the fact of not working and facing the music of loosing everything in my own venture, but maybe someone can give me an insite. I have worked in quality control and production, but people keep looking for me to fix their machines and they only offer me maintenance facility positions. What to do?

We have had similar threads recently...may be worth a search of the site.

If you are going to work for yourself I would suggest that rather than doing a degree course your time would be better spent getting the business going. I would think a degree course would have a huge content which wasn't relevant to your business.

Why do you want another degree? To impress yourself when you interview yourself for a position in your own business?

If in your 7 years experience you have dealt with the other functions in business, I would suggest your experience is probably more useful than an MBA.

Were I interviewing for a position I would set much more store by experience than by an MBA. (Does MBA stand for 'Mastered bu**er all'?)

To ballance the above I would say that if there is a subject you are really interested in or need for your business then go for it...but don't be surprised if the tutors are out of date and out of touch with industry.

Del the grumpy old cynic.

The best engineers have a Solid background in the operation and construction of the mach'y and systems they will be working with.

I would start work in a Job shop, and get the whole picture, become a Journeyman machinist and if possible apprentice as a millwright's assistant. Guaranteed you will be the top notch engineer and likely inventor as well. Jstacat

You are an ME and work in maintenance? Where did you get your ME? Not to be mean, but something does not sound right here? At this juncture, a tech degree would be of little use. After only 7 years on the job, going in to business for yourself would also be a fiasco, since it will take years to get a clientele together. Your best bet may be to get an MBA, go into sales & marketing at your company. I can almost guarantee the sales guys & gals are making more money than you.

I work in maintenance, because this is the natural path that a mechanical engineer takes in GUATEMALA. Unless you start your own company. We have no design whatsoever since we are an "EMERGING" country. An MBA is a NECESITY to work up the ranks in a company leaving behind all you have learned in engineering school.

I kind of follow the same path as you.

I am a ME and I did a master in Engineering Thermodynamics. I worked as maintenance engineer for two years. Another two years as a manager of a bussiness non related to my interest area, I had good accomplishes. I met people, I understood how a company works, I saw that the owner was making a lot of money and we were getting only our wage, I made the bussiness grow.

I realized that there is no security working for someone else. So I decided to quit and begin my own company.

It has been so hard. If you doesn't have a contract to start with, you better have some money saved and a very good bussiness plan.

Also you Must have an ongoing personality to attract buyers, not only good products, if you are the sales person, just for mention one of the characteristics of your personality.

If you think you can do it, go for it. It will be a shame 20 years later you regreat yourself for all things that you didn' do.
