Controlling Water Waves

10/10/2005 10:40 AM

Scientists have discovered that an array of periodic cylinders, fixed to the seabed and extending above water level can refract water waves. The technique is similair to that used in photonic crystals to control lightwaves. There is even a forbidden wave frequency depending on the periodicity of the cylinders. Researchers suggest one application of these arrays could be to focus water waves for the more efficient conversion of water waves to electricity.
