ANU Scientists Create a Tractor Beam on Water

08/11/2014 10:11 AM

Physicists at The Australian National University (ANU) have created a tractor beam on water, providing a radical new technique that could confine oil spills, manipulate floating objects or explain rips at the beach.

All of the alien technology that is being withheld...

This is what we get: moving a Ping-Pong ball around in a fish tank.

I'd be impressed by that.

I suspect many CR4 members would likewise be impressed... I can think of a few members who would even be pleased to see that!

All you need is to drive drug molecules to push inside the cancer cells by directing blood or something like that in many under the microscope observation. Don't get fooled as technology has enormous applications and will be used without ever inventors knowing who used it and for what. Hope for good and appreciate their work.

Shyam my friend, I do hope for good, and I can appreciate the effort these people are putting forward.

As you say, some discoveries create ripples that travel much farther than the discoverers ever imagined.

As I opined (and this is simply my opinion), this has some real issues with scale. My thoughts were of larger scale being impractical for any tangible positive outcome. Your example is quite the opposite; I also have reservations that this could ever be scaled down enough to be of use in the fashion you have offered.

However, I would be pleased to be proven incorrect.

Sound waves go by wavelength and ultrasound waves go much smaller. We already know stone blasting using ultrasonic waves and if motion can be given in desired direction by manipulation of the wavelet then it is wonderful.

It can also be used for doping of molecules or structure change in fluid condition on surfaces like quantum dots and then they can be frozen.

We never know where technology reaches finally. Whales can speak thru entire ocean length at inversion layer depth. Surfaces may have some other advantages.

I remember him. Wasn't he the IRA terrorist bomber?

To borrow from a fast food commercial, "where's the beam?"

Wave manipulation is a not too impressive parlor trick as I see it.

How will this work in 10 foot seas? Or rivers?

There I go again with the negative waves. (Pardon the Pun)

Yeah, he was a winner in the CR4 "I Look Like an IRA Bomber" contest.

I, too, see a probable issue with scaling this to be useful.
