Any compatible PC connected to a small programmable logic controller would do. A <...good choice...> cannot be evaluated yet.

Your obviously right, you will do me an appreciable favour if you can recommend a PLC and its associated connections and software program, or simply recomment a trusted product you know is in accessible market...

Post your request here: Search GlobalSpec or on some PC geek forums that should be easy to find by searching.

"Workstation" has many different connotations and definitions.

If your just looking to control a few devices (home use), then I would recommend an ArduinoDue. They are relatively cheap, easy to use, and have an entire open source community behind them.

EAGLE files: arduino-Due-reference-design.zip

Schematic: arduino-Due-schematic.pdf

Pin Mapping: SAM3X Pin Mapping page

Summary

MicrocontrollerAT91SAM3X8E
Operating Voltage3.3V
Input Voltage (recommended)7-12V
Input Voltage (limits)6-16V
Digital I/O Pins54 (of which 12 provide PWM output)
Analog Input Pins12
Analog Outputs Pins2 (DAC)
Total DC Output Current on all I/O lines130 mA
DC Current for 3.3V Pin800 mA
DC Current for 5V Pin800 mA
Flash Memory512 KB all available for the user applications
SRAM96 KB (two banks: 64KB and 32KB)
Clock Speed84 MHz

Good choice?

Do you mean economical?

You could go to the big boys like Tektronix and get anything you desire.

But for most of us, a better choice would be a cheap laptop and USB and/or Ethernet connected devices.

Back in the day I remember a company called Wago had some great modular I/O devices.

Automation Direct used to have some good prices on good PLC type hardware. I just went there and there is "Click" hardware which looks interesting...

One of my favorite places is www.adafruit.com these days. You'll see why.

You really should be more specific in what you are setting up. If you are setting up a home electronics lab, try googling "home electronics lab".

You will see 82,000,000+ hits. There's bound to be something there....

You might state budget, signal range, voltage range, acquisition rate, amount of samples to average, etc. These factors affect the type of equipment you might want to use, and what experience you have using and specifying software...there are lots of experienced 'guy' in here who may have done something similar.
