Oil from plastics - is this for real?

07/03/2007 4:30 AM

Here's a piece of news that excited me. Zap almost any plastic scrap with microwaves and you recover oil and gas, to burn. The New Scientist wrote about it and so it's probably not an untested process.

Yet, when I visited the site of Global Resource Corpn. the technology holder, my confidence was not too inspired. There was insufficient explanation, a fuzzy video and too little on the plants.

But my hunch says the idea is do-able. "Even at home by a DIY enthusiast?", I'd like to know. Also, would value your reactions and some answers to these questions:

1- Is this a breakthrough or a known-art?

2- If the latter, can the process be rigged at home? Any links?

3- Maybe it won't make energy-economics-sense [or will it? ie, get more for less?] but just converting problematic waste, as say in landfills, may make commercial sense.

Your take?

"Even at home by a DIY enthusiast?"

Some readers would need to consult the domestic authorities for sanctioning experiments of this type in certain parts of the home.

The type of plastic selected needs to be considered carefully, as some types produce noxious substances when burnt, so zapping them beforehand might prove foolhardy. One's fire authority and one's insurance company might also take a keen interest, as might one's neighbours and also the nuisance abatement team at the local authority.

You can use plastic as a fuel by just burning it.

while it releases some irritating gasses which may damage your sperm count, it produces a great amount of heat.[energy].

maybe cars of the future can be propelled by just setting them a-light. zooom.

It leaves an interesting recycling project behind after the journey is complete, too.

I first visited -about 10 years ago -a very successfull plant heated by coal outside of Beijing which turned plastic bags and other plastic items back into distillate fuel very efficiently. (The Inventor had had the designs tested officially and he operated the plant quite successfully. )

Evidently he was making money.

So this method is not new.I am sure you will find the right webbsite if you look hard enough.

What ever happened to those guys that had every news agency's attention, where they claimed that by putting any organic substance in one end of their process, it would create sweet, light crude out the other end?

Their first target was turkey guts. Seems that turkey meat has become so popular that the companies that produce the stuff are left with a millions of tons of waste product that no one wants. These oil guys were going to turn turkey guts into crude. Then, all of a sudden, they just disappeared. Hoax or De Beers-type manipulation by the oil companies... By the way, sweet, light, crude hit almost $72.00 a barrel today...

You decide.

A quick search on the internet showed that the pilot plant in Carthage MO built in 2003 was functioning in 2006 producing 400 barrels of oil a day using the waste from a turkey processing plant. However the local community had filed a law suit in 2005 against the company complaining of obnoxious odors emanating from the plant.

Interesting! But don't you think other investors would be standing in line to get a piece of the action, even if it meant relocating the plant?

I thought it was tires to oil and they just kept re-painting the recyclo-train as they sold more shares to build Old lucky number 9?

Look up 60 minutes episodes from the early 80's.

Sounds like Teflon flue, to me.
