Spinwave Systems Mesh Network

08/19/2014 10:19 AM

Does anyone have experience working with Spinwave Systems wireless mesh networks?

We are using them to count energy meter pulses. My current issue is with one of the gateways to our wired network. I can ping the device IP, but I am not able to pull any data through (using Kepware KEPServerEX via ModbusTCP). Device has an embedded ProtoCessor #FPC-F03. The only recent change with this particular device was a direct connection to the main board via USB for the purpose of repairing/testing the wireless network.

We have multiple gateways on campus, all set up same, this is first time with this particular symptom.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, including snarky ones.

Picture is of identical unit.

First, make cure you have an input signal to the board.

If schematics are available, trace the signal thru the board to the com chip(s).

Surely your campus has a digital scope and someone that knows how to use it for signal tracing.

How was the USB connection made?

Was it a factory USB connection, or was it a field modification?

If a field modification, check all soldering connections with a good light and magnifying glass, including traces around all connections.

What were the results of the communication test?

FPC-F03 could be bad.

Lost any jumpers from the board? Check closely.

Try a loop back test.

Did someone leave unit in loop back test mode?

Perhaps you need a SWRP repeater on the signal, due to distance or obstruction from pulse transmitter location?

How many inputs on this Modbus?

Need more info.

Well, it started working again on its own at 3:30AM, possibly from the server being updated.

I haven't found much online for technical info. I don't know who else is using this stuff and I think the company is reorganizing...

USB connection is to 5-pin connector marked console port with manufacturer supplied cable.

The signal strength through the repeaters is a different problem.

For a dumb electrician such as myself, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting a pair of wires to count a digital input has been easier, more cost effective, and more reliable. The wireless pulse counters and repeaters run on 120V, so adding devices means installing conduit and wire anyway.

I have had good product performance and customer service/tech support from Acromag and Schneider Electric.

Thanks for your suggestions.

J
