Square Washer "Pinned" for Slotted Holes

08/25/2014 9:16 AM

Hello,

I was asked to make a steel members connection with long slotted holes (AISC360), where instead of a High Strenght Bolt connection is used a square washer "pinned" to the plate by four screws, see image: http://www.in.all.biz/img/in/catalog/mi png ...? rrr = 1

Anyone has experience of this kind? Thank you

How is that going to connect the steel members through a slotted hole?

cause final fixing adjustment.

it's a mullion of a curtain walling facade attached to the floor slabs.

Are you asking about availability of this washer, or advisability of using it?

Seems as if expansion/contraction is a concern; if a companion slot is machined into your alum mullion, this slip joint should work in that respect.

Dissimilar metal is a little bit of a concern, but bituminous barrier will probably take care of that.

[edit] Wait... curtain wall facade? If truly a facade, these slot holes are probably contraindicated. Please clarify.

I think they want to drill and tap for the washer after the position of the pin is fixed. The force capacity of the screws would have to equal or exceed the capacity of the pin. I assume this is all aluminum and that the HS bolt ref. is just to describe the slot. Nothing wrong with it.

"Nothing wrong with it."

Agree, not uncommon for a curtain wall. But a façade? Seems wasteful of effort, and provides an opportunity for misalignment if the future.

I'll give you best here, façade is in your bailiwick, I was just thinking of it from a structural viewpoint.

slotted holes usually imply field adjustment. Afixing the washer with screws (bolts and nuts?), means drilling in the field. Also field install. Is the movable hole (acting as a bearing block) an alignnment mechansm, which is then tightened down on as in a fastener, or is it acting as a longintudinal bearing block for a pin that allows expansion and contraction. If you are going to tighten a nut on a bolt through the square washer, it seems like overkill, since you have defeated the joint flexibility. Could be that what I see bears no relation to what you see.

This just may be semantics. Image above is what I have some to call a Curtain Wall. Notice the aluminum framing system is attached directly to the concrete slab and includes their version of a slip joint.

This is an image of a typical façade. Notice that it 'floats', largely independent of the structure.

thanks D. I don't see any opportunity to create a useful joint in that scenario with the OP question, do you?

No, not really.

But I am looking at this with a jaundiced American eye. Construction techniques vary a lot around the world... local customs and codes, materials and skilled workers available, seismic concerns, weather... on and on.

Our OP HipHop is asking about the washer, and we still don't know if he is simply looking for a place to purchase or if he wants advice regarding suitability.
