Series Reactor of Capacitor Bank

08/27/2014 10:29 AM

Sir

33KV 7.2 MVAR DOuble star capacitor bank having total cells 18 No - Per phase 6 No ( Front 3 back 3) cell rating 400KVAR 7.3 KV.with out series reactor the bank is working with out tripping on un balance current relay.when single phase series air core reactor are connected ( each 1.2 KVAR rating) the capacitor bank is tripping on un balance and observed some sparks at one or two reactors.THe healthyness of the reactors is measured with LCR meter and found all are showing equal values and are OK.The reactors are mounted on the same structure of the capacitor cells mounted. The space between capacitor cells and reactors are 1 feet only. what is the reason for tripping when reactors are connected. Is cells and reactors being mounted on the same structure ?

A slight difference in the closing time or the opening time of each of the phase contacts might be sufficient to trip the imbalance relay.

Have the installation checked out by a qualified high voltage Electrical Engineer.

If the ratings are as you described, you might want to reconsider the setup. There is a large difference between 1.2 KVAR and 400 KVAR, much more so 7.2 MVAR. That would certainly explain the arcs.
