Floating Home in NJ

08/27/2014 3:50 PM

Hello, can anyone tell me how to get insurance for a floating home in New Jersey.

My homeowners doesn't cover it and my Marina wants paper work showing that I am covered. I've called several Ins.Co's. but they don't insure in New Jersey.

Any info would be great,

Thankyou.

Floating home wouldn't that be a house boat. Can't insure a house boat in NJ?

Hi There,

No, a floating home has no engine, it's stationary in a marina. Seattle has lots of floating homes, you should google them.

Thanks anyway.

A houseboat doesn't have to have an engine to be called a 'houseboat'.

Floating homes are sold by boat dealers and registered as boats in New Jersey:

Maybe ask a neighbor where they get insurance?

Have you considered moving your floating home to Anywhere But New Jersey? That insurance companies won't insure there seems to me to be a rather obvious incentive.

Just curious, but, if they've no motors, what do all these floating homes do with their sewage?

"Have you considered moving your floating home to Anywhere But New Jersey?"

Isn't that the goal of everyone in New Jersey (and anywhere else, for that matter), to be 'anywhere but New Jersey'?

Sorry, old Vaudeville reflex, just like when anyone mentions Peoria, IL.

On the bright side, you should save some money on flood insurance.

Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate your thoughts, I'm still searching.

Hopefully I'll find someone, and next time I'm down at the Marina I will definitely ask my neighbours.

Thanks again.

Hunh, go figure...

...probably similar to my experiences trying to insure rental property in Virginia after Isabel (2003).

Sorry I couldn't help.

First- Where are you located in NJ? One of the big lakes, Greenwood or Hopatcong? The Delaware River, the Hudson, Raritan Bay, Barnegat Bay, or some other tributary? Makes a big difference in your rates and availability. What size house float do you have?

For insurance Google "house boat insurance in NJ"

Here are some to try. They all insure boats and other watercraft, maybe a floating house too. If they won't insure a house float stick a small kicker on it and call it a house boat:

The hardest part about obtaining boat insurance in NJ is finding the broker or company. Some people do better if they deal with an agent down the shore where many others have boats and insure them. Also check with your home and automobile agents or insurance companies. Many of the automobile insurance companies also deal in boat insurance. Also try some agents and let them do the dirty work.

If it is not a house boat with a motor on it, there is a possibility that it may be covered by you house insurance. Many sailboats with small kickers or no motors are this way. Make sure you tell them that it will not be moving! If they insist on how often you will move it tell them once a year or every five years and only to turn it around to prevent discoloration of the paint or whatever the exterior walls of the floating house are.

Good Luck, Old Salt
