I prefer an ion pump with a good bake out to at least 120°C.

I thought pistons were usually reciprocating. They don't do much when rotating axially.

The rotary vane is the better of the two.

When you use the term 'vacuum' it really means that you are reducing pressure by moving air/gas from one area to another ( usually the atmosphere ).

Why the preamble? It is because the answer to your question depends on YOUR answer to this question;- Which do you want, rapid removal of air or very low pressure?

A domestic vacuum cleaner does the former a piston pump the latter.

The standard vacuum pump for conveying materials is a roots blower.

If you want a reasonable answer you should tell us how this vacuum pump is going to be used and what amount of vacuum you are going to be using. Either of your choices could be correct depending upon usage.
