You need to make a few calls to those who sell it, Murphy.

"When a cow is slaughtered, the skin is removed in one layer. Later at the tannery, the outer layer of skin is separated from the layers of skin. It is shaved off and is usually 3/64" thick, about the thickness of a coin. This outer layer of skin is referred to as the "top grain" and the other layers of skin are referred to as "split hides".

The top grain is best suited to upholstery because it is the strongest and most durable part of the hide, yet it is soft and supple. In fact, top grain becomes more supple over the years and obtains a soft patina. If properly cared for, top grain leather upholstery should last indefinitely.

The split hides are coarser and stiffer and tend to crack more easily. The average wearing time of split hides is 5 years. Split hides are better suited to the garment industry to make shoes, handbags, belts, etc., which are not expected to last more than a season or two."

"Cheaper leather upholstery is often made of split hides instead of top grain leather. The advantages to a manufacturer to use split hides are the cheaper price of split hides per square foot and the greater yield obtained from a split hide. Top grain leather tends to have more scars and surface blemishes than split hides since it is the outside layer of skin. Since split hides have fewer flaws, there is less waste per hide, thus a greater yield per square foot. An average cowhide is approximately 50 to 55 square feet, but only 70% of this area can be used from a top grain hide. In split hides, 90% or more is suitable for use; thus there is only a 10% or less waste factor.

Obviously, the advantage of using split hides is the substantial savings in the cost of the leather; however, that savings is directly responsible for the poor quality and wear ability of the leather. "

DOOD!

Tandy's still around?

Sweet, I remember the Tandy Leather kits we used in Scouting to get our Leatherworking badge.

Haven't heard of them in forever, though.

Safety Engineers refuse to wear split cowhide belts unless in conjunction with suspenders and clean shorts.

Yes we can.

However, that was not the question, which is why nobody had ventured that information yet.

Re: Reg: Leather

I can understand, she's very attached to both.

Why do we always have to use cows, can't we use another source for leather, one that's easier to come by and less likely to attract the PETA protests?

I know, let's use fat people! Some of them already have more skin capita than cows, and it's a growing resource (iv every sense of the phrase) in the US.

"Ohhh, nice couch, is it leather?"

"No."

"Vinyl?"

"Nah."

"Naugahide?"

"Nope, Bubbahide."

(Appologies to any 'big boned' people who were offended, but seriously, in the US, if you DON'T have some level of weight problem, either your entire life revolves around nutrition & fitness, meaning you're doing nothing but maintaining your body at peak levels and 'selling' it (either by being a model, an actor, a stuntman, or a professional athlete), or you have other health issues that are making your body waste away despite the increased calorie intake common in the US. If off-the-wall comments like mine are offensive, perhaps you should sit down and watch some of the routines done by Don Rickles, Sam Kinnison and Andrew Dice Clay. That should help you develop a thicker skin. That way everyone wins, you're not so easily offended, and we can get more layers of split hide out of you.)

(I think I should stop now, before I dig myself in too deep to climb out on my own.)

YES!

Everything's better with Chocolate. Bacon can make everything better too, but Chocolate and Bacon together improves the Bacon.

(It's kind of like the Mohs scale of hardness, Bacon is at a 9.2 on the scale, Chocolate is at 9.4, so Chocolate stratches improves bacon.

If the 'jokelett' (as in "Heh, that was like a joke, but smaller.") about Bessie being 'attached' to her hide (going for the humorous confusion between physical/emotional attachment) didn't let you know I was going for joviality, I would have thought the exchange ending with the punch line 'Bubbahide' would have been as subtle as Ghallager with a watermelon and his Sledge-o-matic.

To paraphrase The Most Interesting man in the World, "I don't always forget to add smilies to my funny posts, but when i do, someone mistakes me for being serious."

As a rule of thumb; don't take me serious on the first read-through of the post. *I* don't even take myself serious most of the time, I know some of the silly places I hang out at and learn bad habits from.

If for automotive purpose, a rawhide shoelace can be used for an emergency fan belt if wetted, tied tightly and allowed to shrink.

I you have a convertible, leaving the top down during a monsoon, would justify using split leather. The horns can be used as a hood ornament.

The other guys here have already covered the cost difference part of your question.
