It needs whatever it says in the instructions, Mildred, otherwise you may find either it won't work or it will get damaged, or possibly both.

Unless it's an air-start diesel you'll need a source of starting power, unless it's a hydraulically controlled system you'll need a source of control power.

for cranking the Engine tou have 3 Options -

1. Electrical Starter

2. Air Starter

3 Hyd Starter...

If you have ordered the DG set with Electrical Starter, you will need the battery bank to supply the power to thie Electrical Starter..
