GMAW-S for LAS Root Service Experience

10/01/2014 3:54 AM

In our fabshop, we frequently use GMAW-S+SAW for heavy wall CS pipe for low pressure steam lines. Radiography quality of butt joints are excellent. However, client rejected our proposal to use the same combination process for low alloy steel with reduced CO2. Client is not interested to approve C02 process for LAS root even after our proposal to reduce CO2 content in the shielding gas. Due to client disagreement, we have to use GTAW+SAW, which may affect our productivity. Does anyone have satisfactory service experience in low alloy steel welds made by GMAW root with 97%Ar+2% CO2 shielding?

Registered CR4 user S. Pradhan might know. If you were a registered user too, you could use CR4's internal messaging system to go faster to where you want to be.

thanks gents for your advice.I directly discussed with client, he is more concerned with lakh of fyooshan.Conventional NDE is vulnerable to Lakh of fyooshan. Moreover, LAS is supposed to hold high pressure and high temperature during service. So, we have to mobilise TOFD or Phased Array contarctor to detect lakh of fyooshan. This process is again costly, so finally we decided to qualify a new procedure for LAS with gtaw root .gtaw hot, fill saw, again fill saw, then cap saw.CS and LAS metallurgy is different.P No. F No, A no. change to be considered.I found this info. in George E. Linnert's Books and AWS handbooks and AMSE IX.thank u again gents.
