hello,

Please can someone help me with how to calculate the fuel consumption per kwh of a CAI spirit 1mw gas engine : heat rate is 15222Btu/kwh, thermal efficiency is 22.4%,exhaust temp is 950 deg F, exhaust flow is 13.1 Ib/s

Not yet.

Have you asked the maker? They'll want more to go on.

Fuel consumption quantity would depend on type of fuel and btu content and load....It would also depend on if you are using the heat exchanger option and in what manner, and if you would include that in gross output...

  • LPG
  • LNG
  • Natural Gas
  • Propane
  • Naptha
  • Kerosene
  • Diesel #2
  • Biofuel
  • Palm Oil
  • Syn Gas

Amazing how these interview questions can stop most wannabes dead in their tracks. The answer is in your question; look at the units for heat rate, all you need is the heating value of your fuel, btu per gallon/liter/ft³/m³/etc...and some education/experience in the job title.

You said it is a 1MW gas engine. IF the engine is operating with a 1MW (net output), then in one hour that is 1000kWh. The BTU consumption is therefore this: 15222*1000 =15,222,000 BTU/hr (15.222 MMBTU/hr). Natural gas varies quite a bit, depending on source and treatment. For simplicity, assume for now 1000 BTU/scf. Thus in one hour, you will need: 15222000/1000 scf = 15222 scf/hr, or 4.2283 scf/sec. If the gas is 1035 BTU/scf, then you will need less: 15222000/1035=14,707 scf/hr, or 4.0853 scf/sec. I hope that answers your homework.
