English word 'Petroleum': From Latin root words

petra = rock
oleum = oil

Or this from Wiki:

Rock oil (Scottish Gaelic: Ola-nan-creag), is an ointment made from a thin film obtained on rocks by the sea, and used for a relief for burns and scalds.

It is not to be confused with petroleum which literally means the same.

Semantics... peculiarities in the English language.

References:
Buggy whip. Really? Why, was the buggy being bad?
Chain Saw: Everyone knows you don't saw a chain!

Rock Oil: Oil from amidst the rocks, not squeezed FROM the rocks.

Yes....

..."by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. These processes convert the organic matter within the rock (kerogen) into synthetic oil and gas"....

Any rock, no that is not possible. Certain rocks, absolutely.
