Future of the Earth: 500 Years From Now

10/21/2014 7:06 AM

If you could travel back in time five centuries, you'd encounter a thriving Aztec empire in Central Mexico, a freshly painted "Mona Lisa" in Renaissance Europe and cooler temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere. This was a world in the midst of the Little Ice Age (A.D. 1300 to 1850) and a period of vast European exploration now known as the Age of Discovery. But what if we could look 500 years into the future and glimpse the Earth of the 26th century? Would the world seem as different to us as the 21st century would have seemed to residents of the 16th century? For starters, what will the weather be like?

The thing about predicting the future is that we have historically always been wrong.

Even 30 - 40 years ago predictions were starkly wrong as to what we have today. Predicting 500 years out belongs squarely in the realm of science fiction.

Note that the last word there is fiction.

Most of our favorite music dates from 30 to 40 years ago, and if we force our memory, we will have to admit that the world was pretty much the same back then.

War, disease, great inventions, tyranny, poverty, art flourishing, medicine advances and almost any possible human experience keeps circling throughout mankind existence.

It will be the same for as long as we can exist.

"It will be the same for as long as we can exist."

And therein lies the rub. We're making great strides, don't get me wrong.

Why, in every war they kill you in a new and better way. Progress.

I thought you would unmask my tricky last sentence, as it implies that if at certain point we should cease to exist, it is because the world wouldn't be precisely the same anymore.

I'd like to discuss those new and better ways to kill but I've got to go for now, I hope this thread is still alive tomorrow.

Re: Future of the Earth: 500 Years From Now

10/21/2014 9:53 AM

Wow, 500 years into the future. I usually don't cast that far into the future, but since you have asked I will take a few moments from my usual pastime of bending spoons with my mind and answer the question you have posed.

In the year 2514, the Danish krone will be the currency of the world. 100 kroner will be the price for one kilogram of gold.

In the year 2514, the Chevrolet Cavalier will still be the most troublesome car on the planet, this despite many and varied attempts by Coca-Cola™, Kris-Del™ Corporation, BRAWNDO™, NIKE™, and LynDoor™ Industries to corner the global market for newer, better, shinier unreliable automoblies.

In the year 2514, SavvyExacta IV, CEO of industrial giant IHS (and great-granddaughter of the wildly popular 59th President of the United States SavvyExacta) will release information regarding their mining colony on the planet Neptune, this a project of their most lucrative division, CR4. The release will include more information regarding the puzzling discovery of what appears to be broken bits of a cast iron bathtub uncovered in Gold Pit #3166.

In the year 2514, the congress of the world will repeal the first and second laws of thermodynamics. This action will be a response to the popular notion that over-unity devices should work, and the subsequent notion that the only thing that keeps them from working are these stupid laws.

Whew, I'm exhausted. That is all that I have for you now.

I would guess that we will have the moon moderately well populated along with Mars and a number of local asteroids of which going to either will be no different than doing a present day transcontinental flight.

Earth the planet wise I am rather sure science will have a few more new natural phenomenons that we wont have all that well cataloged and documented and the politicians will all be putting up a big fuss about how we humans are affecting the whatever it is we most recently discovered and can not prove nor disprove we have any real lasting effect on.

Transportation wise we will have electric vehicles that still have crappy ranges because they latest and greatest super battery/capacitor devices that hold as much power as our present day banks of batteries will be the size of a toaster and the people who design the vehicles will still have trouble figuring out how to put two or more of them in a vehicle so that it has decent range.

Thats what I expect.

In the Year 2514, man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

And a nod to Zager and Evans as I meander my way through a psychedelic flash-back.

Thanks for that flashback:

Here is a link to the whole song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Glen Campbel also had a song out where his son is asking him about the past, but I

can't remember the words exactly,it was back in the lat 60's or early 70's,I think.

(I don't remember much about the 60's,kind of fuzzy-like...to much time spent in "The Hotel California,I guess."

Part of it was: "Did birds really fly, and what was tv?

"Did children look different from me?"

A link to that song would be appreciated if you can find it.

Re: Future of the Earth: 500 Years From Now

10/21/2014 11:02 PM

In 500 years,I would expect a merging of computers and humans, and a drastic

modification of the human genome.

A human will have green skin, or a molecular nano-skin that can harvest photons of

any wavelength, and obtain energy from light, as plants do,

and the hybrid human will process the carbon dioxide generated from internal

metabolism, the same as plants do now, and the oxygen waste from photosynthesis

will be consumed by the warm bodied portion of the hybrid. This will constitute a

closed loop for carbon dioxide and oxygen. The hybrid humans will have an enhanced

immune system, making any disease or infection very rare.Circulation will be by the

body as a whole, not requiring a heart for pumping, rather the arteries and veins

themselves will pulse to move the "blood",but not blood as we currently define

it.

Keyboards and monitors and current man/machine interfaces will be ancient

artifacts, and be replaced by thought control, and all humans will be interconnected

and share information freely.

The moon will look entirely different, being covered with reflective

domes over all major craters, and will glitter like a diamond in the sky.

Because of this, the Earth will not be as dark at night, and ecologists will press for an

anti reflective coating on the domes.

The Earth will return to a more pristine ecology because additive manufacturing will

be done in space, where it is cheaper and there is an infinite heat sink and asteroids

for mining raw materials.

And there will still be Hitek Redneks rambling away somewhere, down on Earth, starting fires with flint and steel, and hunting with bow and arrow.

Some parts of society have more inertia than others (attested by previous post) whilst some have more momentum - angular momentum, that is; styles have a way of coming back (their practitioners always think it's forward linear momentum of course, but we know better )

Parents will still complain "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

The moon will NOT be populated, but water on Mars will be used to grow enough plants to form an atmosphere (called terraforming, this is already planned and quite do-able) and Mars will be populated. I'll bet ya!

Re: Future of the Earth: 500 Years From Now

It is my opinion, arrived at only reluctantly and with sadness, that civilization will have ended, and humankind will be gone.

When optimism sneaks in, I envisage perhaps small tribes of humans surviving in a very difficult environment.

The problem is, we humans use science to "get what we want", individually, with the expectation that the world will absorb the downside of our taking from the Earth; and we can then move on to the next "want" in our endless quest for personal fulfillment.

As you may note, there are many intractible sets of limitations "coming due" in the next 100 years, (global atmospheric warming, ocean acidification, overpopulation, rising sea levels, increased radicalism, and increased individual "power" to destroy...) and there are few or no signs that the "institutions of man" are changing their mode of behavior..

And thus we drift (paraphrasing Einstein) towards unmitigated catastrophe.

("The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe." - Albert Einstein ...)

Or maybe I'm just trying to scare folks on All-Hallows'-Eve ..??

I suspect your predictions will probably be wrong, just as Einstein's prediction is proving to be.

After two world wars the number of dead from WW I is estimated at about 16 million and WW II about 60+ million (perhaps another 50 million in China).

Since WW II the number of casualties from war has dropped enormously. Ironically, that is directly due to the invention of the nuclear bomb and mutual assured destruction, as shaky as it is.

It seems to be an inherent nature for human beings to always carry the poster of 'The End is Nigh'.

None have been right yet in the last several millenniums, but I am sure there will be some twisted folks rubbing their hands together in glee if that should change.

Well, the "drift" we're talking about since the end of WWII (When Einstein stated the quote above...)

certainly has not been given very much time to assert it's accuracy, or lack of it.

But, it is not my place to argue against optimism: what will be, will be.

The next decade will be "Murder".

(Reference to Leonard Cohen, "The Future": a prophetic song..)

Speaking of songs, the Russians love their children, too.
