Surely you must have an opinion why it's 2 (or 2.5) mm.

What would you like it to be?

ASTM D1816.

I'm assuming that you are referring to the gap between the electrodes, and also assuming that you are referring to a transformer oil dielectric breakdown voltage test kit.

If so, the gap is necessary in order to test the dielectric integrity of the oil between the two electrodes, this becomes the test sample.

You would normally test then stir and test again, etc. to get different samples between the probes.

I would guess that different manufacturers may have varying gaps for their products, possibly dependent on the test voltage of the megger being used.

The important criterion for testing transformer oil is Dielectric strength(kV/mm) which the oil/transformer manufacturer or Codes like BS,IEC,NEC,NEMA,VDE etc normally specifies. Also rated rated voltage of transformer is important.Other aspects like tan delta, acidity etc too are important.

Because Goldilocks said so--neither too big nor too small.

(Why a BlowDown Valve would care is a mystery.)

To save space.

If it was 6mm it would be too big.

If it was 3mm the packaging would be bigger.

Because some decided to make it that gap size.

They packed the wrong gap in the kit.

That was all the space that had available when the made the kit.

You could only afford the 2mm gap version.

The 3, 5, 6, and 10mm gaps are optional extras.

I give up. Why?
