Paint on Silicon Sealant

11/01/2014 5:16 AM

Hi,

I have used silicon sealant to make up for the dips on surface of epoxy reinforced with fiber glass. I want to paint it while for a good look.

It appears that paint does not stick over silicon sealant surface (Tried PU based paint, acrylic paint)

Which type of paint should be used ? What surface preparation is necessary?

Please share your knowledge & experience - Thank you !!

I Google'd 'paint over silicone sealant' and found several suggestions you might try before removing and replacing it.

You can't paint it. Many types of silicone are unpaintable because of the chemical makeup.

You may be able to apply a "paintable" grade of silicone over the unpaintable grade already there.

Scrape the silicon off, sand to a clean surface, level with epoxy (filler) (System Three has many types), and then sand smooth, then use a compatible paint.

Paint and silicon sealant just don't go together.

"Silicon" and "silicone" are 'WAY different in almost every characteristic. "Silicon" (glass) can be painted with nearly anything but "watercolor"; "silicone" is not reliably paintable by anything that I know of.

You can paint over silicone if you add the (elasticizer/plasticiser?) for auto bumpers. It is because the silicone is not solid and moves under the paint and it will crack the paint on the surface then fall off. It won't be cheep if you are covering a large area but it will work. We use it to seal wheel wells on our race cars to keep out the smoke. Then we paint over it for looks and easier clean up. It has lasted for a number of years and different cars. Duke

Hi,

Have you tried with latex based paints . To paint on such surfaces there are so many latex based paints are available. Such paints will be good as it has the tendency of sticking with silicon rubber as well as silicon bases.

You try and get some small sample from hardware shop to convince your self and try further.

A GA to both LYN and GW. Both are workable answers in my experience.
