Tektronix 1502 TDR, Suggestions Please?

11/11/2014 11:14 PM

Good Morning All,

This will come from the department of odd questions (that is, supporting really old stuff), but here goes:

I'm a retired Vet (USAF) with Tektronix experience that goes back to the 465M 'scope of the mid-70's. I'm working with a recently separated Vet, in getting him into the 'cable' business and was planning on donating some of my gear (i.e. Tek 1502 TDR, s/n R118430) to start him out up. When I pulled the unit out of the closet, I could not get the 4 division high pulse (Manual 170-1792-02, 4-2 and 4-3,) that I did when I last checked the unit. This is what (all) I see, with or without the 50 ohm terminator in place; also very noisy:

So, is my tunnel diode or the sampling network shot, or, as I suspect has my shorting BNC connector gone?? Or.....

These are what I used to get reading a cable:

My question becomes, any "old-timers" around that might be able to start me on the path to fixing this up?? I've thought about sending it in for a calibration, but at the moment the dollars just are not there. I'm an M.E. not an E.E!!

Any suggestions or contacts would be most appreciated.

Respectfully submitted,

GLB

When the trace goes up, it indicates an open circuit, down, a short. Never used it to verify a diode. There is a setting called velocity or velocity factor. It must be set to match the speed of electricity in the cable under test. Coax typically varies from 80% to 95%. Household wire maybe as low as 68%. These numbers are available on the internet for the cable/wire in question. The velocity is partly based on the type, but may also vary slightkly from manufacturer to manufacturer. These units are quite valuable. To calibrate (roughly) find the specs of cable/wire you typically are going to use and purchase 100 ft of it. Adjust the settings accordingly and use that as your reference.

Household wire will be difficult as the velocity will change if the conductors are not parallel. Lamp cord would be acceptable.

I have the manual for an earlier Tektronix scope, all valve driven. Can not remember the model off hand. If its of any help I can pull it from my library next week when I go to it and send you some pictures. Just ask.

It is not an O'scope, it is a TDR Time Domain Reflectometer. It is used to determine the type of fault (open or short) and its distance from the origin in coaxial cable.

IAW typical Yahoo SOP, this is a waste of time! The usual missing moderators and a whole pile of ads!! Not for the serious test equipment conversation!

You can also check other sites for the unit service manual. Also try limiting your search on Google by using the 'filetype:pdf' parameter to search for downloadable pdf's.

It's best to start by looking at all the power supplies for normal voltage and ripple. Aside from that, it has been too long since I worked on any to give any more suggestions.

I too have one of these instruments and I've never found a manual for it.

If you have a manual in pdf form I would be extremely interested in having a 'copy'

John.

Tekscopes is moderated quite well. No spam. It did, for me, however. take a while to get approved.

You should also join two archive groups as well. That's on the group's "splash page". There are posts about the 1502 TDR.

It's very well behaved. Yahoo anything, is not.
