Objective: Design of the main towers for the Sagrada Familia in Ice
Description: The Design of the Sagrada Familia in Ice is based on the design of the real Sagrada Familia by Antoni GaudÃ. The design consists of the big tower with a height of 37.5m (42.5m with cross), the nave with a height of 18.75m, the four towers of 26.25m (2x) and 22.5m (2x) and the front entrance. In order to deliver an analytical and numerical design of the main tower (37.5 m), the group will haveto: 1) assess the loads acting on the structures (e.g. self-weight, wind load, snow load, etc.). For the determination of wind and snow load, usage of the Eurocode (Finland) is recommended; 2) elaborate a first and rough design using gained knowledge from the course and by performing simplified analytical calculations. Especially the thickness of the ice shell should be estimated; 3) create a consistent numerical model using finite element software (Abaqus), based on the preliminary design. This finite element model will be used to fine-tune the design of the structure taking into account the boundary conditions, loads and load conditions, materials, etc; 4) formulate design recommendations based on the analytical and numerical results. Different aspects which are dealt with in this chapter are related to the former chapters (cfr. Chapter 1-5). The corresponding design recommendations will be used for the construction of the Sagrada Familia in Ice;
