Drill Update

11/15/2014 8:11 AM

I read this morning Phillae did in fact operate its drill and was able to use its onboard mass spectrometer to analyze the sample as well as transmit that data before its batteries ran out! no report on the contents yet. that might be it for the lander....or maybe it will trickle charge without fully exposing its solar panels, perhaps as it heads closer to the sun it can eek out more data.

I consider the ESA wildly successful on this mission. congrats guys and galshttp://news.yahoo.com/low-battery-comet-probe-alive-uploading-data-esa-224233729.html

I agree. This has been a triumph of space exploration.

Thank You, Fredski, for the update and the information that a drill sample has been taken, analyzed and transmitted.

I find it to be very cool, too.

It dawns on me now that this landing has happened, can a change in this comet's trajectory be eventually measured? I realize the change will be imperceptible now, in many months it may amount to a measurable difference. The mass and relative velocity of Philae to 67P is known. This could be a method to confirm the mass and average density of 67P.

I too agree this is really amazing!

I haven't seen a value for the mass of the orbiting Rosetta, but I'm sure it is considerably than that of Philae. It too would have to be taken into account...

On the other hand, the added mass of Philae would affect the spin of the comet, and over time that could be useful information...

Perhaps if everyone on Earth hold up a mirror in the right direction...?

There's that BIG laser at Rutherford-Appleton labs they could use. Ten petawatts should do it.

Baaaaaaad Kitty.

I usually say there are better things in which to invest time and money than drilling holes in big ice cubes.

But, I get the same sense here that I got 45 years ago when we were using slide rules and T squares to go to the moon.

Right on!

I ran across this picture and thought it was interesting. It puts it in scale...

Count me in for a slice. I've just spent several mins trying to determine if I suck more than blow. No easy thing when you try to measure it. Suck, blow, pause, it's roughly 1:4:6. My experiment has flaws - just woke up, first coffee of the day etc - but I'm certain there is some frackin sport to be had in this .

Why isn't that thing sitting on NYC? All the world's disasters happen there according to Hollywood (and Michael Bay mostly). I've lost count of the times the Statue of Liberty has been demolished by asteroid-induced tsunamis, aliens falling to Earth, Dogzilla, etc. What, have Hollywood now decided that their own environs need an Urban Removal Project?

Re: Solar panels. I thought they were originally in the shadow of a cliff, and then were able to skillfully move the mirror aprox. 30 degrees, and get much better exposure to sunlight? Maybe not enough exposure, or too much power being consumed in relation to the capacity of the panel to recharge? Thanks..
