Time Lapse View of the Sun

11/18/2014 7:26 PM

This is kind of cool. (Since it appears to be turning the wrong way, its either upside down or viewed from the southern hemisphere.) It's interesting how the gas eruptions follow the magnetic field lines and pretty much ignore the sun's intense gravity, shooting out in arcs and returning by the same paths.

The Solar Dynamics Observatory is actually a spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit.

In the video the Sun is turning 'the wrong way' as usually seen in video shot in the northern hemisphere, but astronomers are accustomed to seeing objects in telescopes 'upside down'. Just keep in mind that 'North' is down.

Yes, it is stunning video. The filter needed to view this kind imagery is very expensive for the average amateur astronomer. The wavelength viewed is probably the Hydrogen Alpha line at 656.28 nanometers (red), but the bandwidth is very narrow - probably only 0.07 nanometers wide. The cost is $1K to $3K, US dollars. After watching this video I'm tempted to raid the savings account and buy one.

I'm auditing an astrophysics course at the U of MN (it's free for seniors!), and we've been studying the formation and life of stars. Incredible energies involved, and lots of stuff we still don't understand. Why does our sun have an 11 year cycle? And why and when do the poles swap? Photons formed in the nuclear core bounce their way to the surface in a million years, then take just 8 minutes to reach the Earth.
