Permenant Magnet Design: How to do it?

07/06/2007 4:48 AM

i work on the project related to magnetic coupling. by the profession i am a mechanical engineer studing in the third year .there is a difficulty to design the permenant magnets. thanks if you would help me please!!!!!!!!!!

"Magnetic coupling" is a very broad term and application dependent. Be specific.

it's a high power magnetic coupling which can transmit nearly 300 Nm to 500 Nm torque.

i wamt to use permanent rare earth magnet for the perticular thing. now professionaly i in mechanical engineering so it's very difficult to me to understand the electrical language, but it's very easy for the person relates to the electric field. if you can help me then there will be total response from my side.

thanks for responding me Mr. john.

I agree. I have a water pump used for DI water. To keep the water pure the pump shaft is driven by a motor magnetically coupled to the impeller inside the body of the pump. Both use permanent magnets.

Is this the sort of thing you're talking about or something different. Please explain.

Do you need to engage the coupling permanently or to disengage it from time to time?

What is the pull-out torque in your application? Does it need a torque limiter?

Try this Canadian company:

or read this patent: US 4,856631 owned by Mitsubishi

or buy this article that teaches you all the computation:

thanking you for the reply, i nics d patel taking you to the information which you are asking for.

it's needed to disengage the coupling time to time.

the pull out torque is 90 percent or more of the application, and ofcourse it need the torque limiter.

i'll be grateful to you if you provide me some more lineage in my project.

looking forward for your reply.

How are you going to release the coupling force with a permanent magnet? With a permanent your coupling will be, permanent.

Is your coupling contact or non-contact? Is the coupling hold by magnetic force only or by friction between 2 magnetic attached part?

Look up equations on magnetic force. Also look up how to get magnetic force form electric current. Engineering library should help.

Also what do you mean by "difficulty to design permanent magnet"? You don't design them, you look up a catalog with spec and use them. Same with electro magnet. You design how much magnet force you need in you design then find a magnet that fit your need.

An engineer should not limit their knowledge to one field only.

A good engineer make use of all available resources in the design. Most of the components are out there just use them. Don't invent them again.

Hi Pineapple,

It might seem strange, but it is possible to release a PM setting used as a torque coupling.

Another thing is that nikunj.theone did correctly understand that is about design, not just consulting a catalog. Magnetic circuits are learned by electrical engineers and is not that simple to calculate a magnetic force, especially when it is generated by permanent magnets. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software is used nowadays.

I agree that an engineer should have multidisciplinary knowledge but cannot be efficient in everything. I still think that the best way is to get professional help from a company having the necessary profile or some university to customize the needed solution.

Regards,

Michael
