Bonding with Aluminum

11/21/2014 10:38 AM

Hello:

We are TIG welding some Aluminum water troughs with banked turns constructed with wedges of material welded together inside and out, then ground smooth on the inside.

The inside radii are cleaning up well and acceptable. The outside radii are not smoothing out well due to the angle of the wedges coming together when the weld is ground down there is a pronounced 'undercut' on each side of the welds.

The undercuts are not from the weld itself, it is more of a void where there is no material...kind of hard to explain.

Anyhow, what I am looking for is some kind of bonding agent that would look good and smooth and fill in the voids on either side of the welds. Things like bondo or JB Weld come to mind or something along those lines. Some kind of paste that will set up with time.

Has anyone had experience doing what I am trying to do? What kind of material would work well? A matching color to the unfinished Aluminum would be super cool.

The troughs are 5052-H32 Aluminum carrying water at ambient temperatures.

Thanks for any help.

I just got off the phone with Belzona then watched some uTube on their 1111 product. Not exactly what I am looking for but may work if I cannot find something better.

This is a grey thixotropic filled epoxy. It will slump, so if you use it, you may want to thicken it with some colloidal silica (Cab-O-Sil M-5) Or tilt the troughs while it cures.

Obviously abrasion (sanding) and good cleaning are essential. It does set up to a hard, rigid cure.

Manufacturer

Henkel-Hysol

Description

Hysol EA 934NA is a two-component thixotropic paste adhesive, which cures at room temperature and possesses superior strength to 300°F/149°C and higher.

Application

EA 934NA's thixotropic nature and good compressive strength make it ideal for potting, filling and fairing, as well as for shim applications.

Properties

Thixotropic, good gap filler, high compressive strength

Should have added that it can be applied with a caulking gun or large syringe.

If looks are important, don't try to trowel it into in the crevices.

Be aware that Cabosil is considered an agent that will damage your lungs if inhaled. Wear a good breathe or a very good mask!.
